I’ve been obsessed with listening to the Holiday Pop station on MSN radio. No, it’s not all about Britney Spears and Destiny’s Child belting out their own versions of Silent Night. The station has a wide range of music, from pop to vocal to r&b to rock to country to traditional. They are also good about not playing the same song in the same sitting.

Anyhow, this song called “Christmas Shoes” by NewSong came on and the lyrics made me smile. It reminded me of a situation I came across when I used to work as a sales associate at a women’s department store back in high school. It was December and our store was always busy due to the Christmas rush. While I was managing the fitting rooms, a mother and her 3-year old daughter came in to try on some shoes.

Mother: “These shoes don’t fit right. And these are nice, but they are too expensive.”

Daughter: “Why do you need to get new shoes, Mommy?”

“Because my shoes are old and starting to get holes in them. I like these shoes but I don’t think I will get them. They’re too expensive.”

“Mommy, my shoes are new! I like my shoes.”

“Yes, dear. I am glad you like them.”

After a pause, the three-year-old says, “Mommy. You don’t have to spend money! You can have my new shoes.”

I thought that was the cutest thing in the world. The girl was so young and only spoke simple english. My heart simply melted.

Finally! A group of our level 7 Inland Northwest Ballet students from Spokane made a much anticipated trip…Miss Janine, along with parents, took the girls to get fitted for their very first pointe shoes!
Empire Dance, located in downtown Spokane, is THE place to go for the best fit. The owner Philip Broadbent, along with his wife Sally, both danced professionally in Europe for many years, and truly know ballet. It can be a long process to get the correct fit, but so important to asssure the health of the dancer’s feet, lower back, and hips. After the fitting, Philip gives the girls a talk about the care of pointe shoes, along with ribbons and elastics and what to do with both, and answers any questions they may have.
At Inland Northwest Ballet, we are very cautious about whom we allow to dance on pointe, some of these girls have been dancing for 12 years! They had their first class on Saturday, and said it felt “amazing” to go on pointe. What fun!

Ballet Pointe Shoe Progression

Females have been dancing ballet moves since the late 1600’s. Back then the shoes they wore were very different. The ballet shoes of that time period had heels on them. In the 18th century a ballet dancer named Marie Camargo was one of the first to dance in shoes that had no heel. The heel being gone from her ballet shoes made it where she could do better leaps. Then after the French Revolution was over a predecessor to today’s ballet pointe shoes was created. These new ballet slippers were held on to the feet by ribbons that the dancers tied around their ankles. The shoes also had pleats located under the toe of the ballet slipper so the ballerinas could stretch their toes out completely.

Modern Ballet Slippers
The modern ballet slipper like we know it today can be attributed to the great ballerina Anna Pavlova. Pavlova had extremely high arches on her feet that made her injure her feet when she danced en pointe. Pavlova also had long skinny feet that put a lot of pressure on her big toes. Pavlova started taking leather soles and putting them in her ballet slippers to form a sort of box to make en pointe easier for her to perform. Several other dancers said Pavlova was cheating by doing this. However, once the ease of this application was tried by other ballerinas the idea started to catch on quickly. Now Pavlova is recognized for this change in ballet pointe shoes.
Demi-Pointe Shoes
Demi pointe or half pointe shoes are not designed for a dancer to perform en pointe for extended times. They are often used as en pointe training shoes but the demi-pointe shoe does not have sufficient support for the ballerina’s feet. They are designed to look more like a ballet slipper, but have some of the strength of pointe shoes.
