Like many of my friends, historically, I have always waited until the last minute to start my Christmas shopping. Yes, you put a lot of extra pressure on yourself when you’re searching for last-minute Christmas gifts, but at the same time, you might find yourself getting more into the Christmas spirit. At least, that’s what I always told myself.

But sometimes the best Christmas shopping is done right after Christmas–when all of the real shopping deals appear. But unless your family is really thrifty and as deal-savvy as you, they might not appreciate getting their Christmas gift on January 5th.

It’s never too early to start your Christmas shopping though for the upcoming holiday. If you make yourself a list of who you have to buy for, chances are throughout the year, you will accidentally stumble upon ideal Christmas gifts when you aren’t even looking. And that’s when your Christmas shopping burden lessens.

I’ve always found it easier to do destination shopping, looking at the list and going to the store that has the item I need. But it doesn’t need to be that linear either. Again, planning your shopping throughout the entire year can make Christmas shopping less of a task, and more part of your normal shopping experiences. Little items purchased throughout the year might make stockings easier to fill. Cards, paper, and other items picked up when you’re out doing other shopping can help you at Christmas as well.

I’m not saying that your Christmas shopping patterns will work with this year-round suggestion; I’m just suggesting that waiting until the last minute to buy all your Christmas gifts might not make you feel as festive as you thought.
